Does it strike you as odd that Raoul and Buri have known each other for nearly twenty years. One day, Kel suggests that Buri be Raoul's "date" since they get along so well, and the next thing you know they're in bed together?

I mean... how random is that? Especially if it's end-all, be-all "let's get married before the series ends" kind of love. A fling? Sure, I could handle that. (erm, maybe) But it just seems too... convenient. Trite. Unrealistic.

Let's hope that no one else takes Kel's suggestions quite so much to heart. We might end up with Wyldon/Owen slash or something. *shudder*

I never really thought of it this way, that would make it a plot hole wouldn't it? Well let me just pretend its because they never really spent that much time togeather before the whole centar raiding thing in Squire, and that, that and those little "lets ditch the big parties to help out Shinko and Roald get-togeathers" made them know eachother better...? Okay I'm rambleing and probably getting the order of things mixed up.

I would have to agree with you regarding the improbability. You'd think that if the emotions were there, they would've tried it sooner or something *G*

For what it's worth, if Raoul has to with someone I think Buri's one of the better choices (I know you don't like the insularity of characters getting paired off with people who have already been introduced, but I sorta do) but you are right, the relationship between Buri and Raoul does seem odd.

I myself was very dismayed that Raoul and Buri ended up getting married in LK. I can accept them in a long-term relationship if I try really hard, but I don't think it follows the personalities of their characters to get married. I have nothing against marriage, really, but...I don't know how to put it. It seems to me like their relationship is built on each of them being independant and having a life outside of each other, and the marriage, ESPECIALLY the way it was approached, seems to contradict that.

But I am admittedly very very biased.

Eep. I just realized that I let Ms. Snark post without explaining.

I actually think Raoul and Buri are well-suited to each other. That's part of my problem with the pairing, that "why now?!" question is in my head since they've known each other for 15+ years. You would think that the compatability and romantic chemistry would've revealed itself (via physical relationship, best friend-ship or even reader-noted UST).

I should point out that, though the relationship irks me very much (and I prefer slashy interpretations for both) I *do* think they're rather cute as a couple. The size-difference alone is adorable. And if I have to lose--er, see him marry someone, Buri is probably the best choice. (though I was admittedly a Raoul/Kel shipper.)

Amen to that. The marriage at the end was what made me shout "no! enough all ready!" because I don't think marriage makes sense for their relationship. But I'm biased, too, as someone who just doesn't get marriage. *sweat*

I'm, in general, a supporter of the institution of marriage for all who really want to get into it (not to say that it fixes anything or that I'm disagreeing with you, because I'm not) but I just don't think it makes SENSE for Buri and Raoul.

For the record, I had the hardest time not continuing this reply to talk about Gary and Cythera, because apparently whenever my mind wanders over the topic of one of the guys, the other one is right behind *G*

Oh, you're absolutely right! I *adore* their relationship and wouldn't change it for the world, now that it's fully established. When I started writing my (unfinished) PotS saga, it was right after Page and I was planning on hooking up Raoul & Kel. But after Squire came out it was impossible to take it down that path... so I think my R/B liking was also hindered by my initial desires going into Squire.

Ok, if you say so....

I would go as far as to say that Raoul's marriage to Buri makes even less sense than Gary's marriage to Cythera. While Raoul can pretty much ignore the rumors that get started about him, Gary is a high-ranking member of the Court and any rumors about him and "deviant" sexual practices could be very bad in a realm where there is apparently already some lack of faith in the rulers.

That being said, it also makes Gary/Cythera a lot easier to explain away than Raoul/Buri :)

I wasn't terribly surprised to read that Gary married Cythera--I don't know why. (Maybe I was proud of the little devil for snagging the prettiest girl at pre-Thayet court?) But when I saw that Buri and Raoul were interested in people of the opposite sex, my brain couldn't totally wrap around it. Maybe I'd been reading too much Thayet/Buri fiction, or I'd rested too much hope in Raoul's random line about rumors of sleeping with his men. :shakehead

Maybe I'd been reading too much Thayet/Buri fiction, or I'd rested too much hope in Raoul's random line about rumors of sleeping with his men.

They both do come off as bisexual at the least, more so in my opinion than any other characters besides Lark and Rosethorn. There was also just something about the WAY that Raoul's rumors were presented, the way that Flyndan didn't say "we've told them it's not true" or "we let them know that you've screwed plenty of chicks," it's "We've explained it's nobody's business" as if it's not so much a denial of the rumors but rather a refusal to talk about it. Very very interesting, and it makes me wonder if Raoul's men weren't just as surprised at the turn of events as we were.

I mean, Myles and Eleni, Neal and Yuki, Coram and Rispah, Jon and Thayet--these were all convenient, like Raoul and Buri, but they also came after an instantaneous attaction and relatively short courtships. But Raoul and Buri... he's known her since she was a teenager: they travelled together from Uyadappur. They've probably worked together as leaders of the Riders and Own. They've certainly *talked* a lot, and are on friendly terms.

To me this sets such a strong platonic friendship that it doesn't make sense for them to fall into bed without explanation--or (more importantly to me) to have a relationship develop after said falling into bed.

I guess I'm being difficult because I love Buri, and I don't like growling at her for taking Raoul away from my chosen Raoul-partners. (Gary, Sacherell, Douglass, ME!)
