I saw it last night, and I have to say that I loved it. The acting was great, and the special effects were phenomenal. It makes me so excited to see the next one! Before I saw the movie, I was upset that they cut out the last few chapters, but I'm okay with it now. The movie was far too bright and cheery for my liking. I mean, it's rated PG-13. They might as well stop trying to make it a kids' movie. I was disappointed at the lack of any reference to Stanislas Grumman and his severed head, as that becomes important later on. I liked the movie far more than I expected, though. Dakota Blue Richards did a really good job as Lyra. ******************* The book looked pretty authoritative, too, without too many long (and therefore untrustworthy) words, like "marmalade." - "Wintersmith" by Terry Pratchett

I mean, it could have at least been LotR-length long. It didn't do well at the box office though, which makes me sad. I think it was too confusing for general audiences and too disappointing for fans of the books. They tried to fit too much into too little time. Plus, they tried to market it toward families and children despite the PG-13 rating, which didn't do them any good. Those books are not children's books. They are dark and somewhat disturbing and have some semi-adult content in them as well. I didn't even start the first one until the end of 6th grade, despite the fact that I'd been given the book as a gift when I was 7 or 8. Posts: 2035 (12/22/07 07:05:05) King of Thieves Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it and thought it was good, but after talking with some friends I think they could have added more of the controversial elements in...I mean, the people asking for a boycott obviously don't care that they toned it down, and now the fans are disappointed... Most of the things that they changed, missed out, or added, I could understand although there were one or two things that irritated me. As for the controversial elements of the trilogy.. The books are immensely powerful. I think they could easily have retained much of the anti-christian themes without causing too many heads to explode. I mean, the magisterium is obviously the catholic church and (apart from the other two books), the antagonisation isn't worse than other books and films, for example we all remember the fuss Dan Brown caused with The Da Vinci code.. It occurred to me that Pullman was being compared with C.S Lewis, possibly a reason why the makers wanted to dull down the fact that the ideaology is totally different (and not to cause riots among certain societies). All in all, I think they did rather well, although I'm still going to tell people to pick up the f***ing book. --Violet
