Do you read the newspaper?
When you do you read it? During breakfast? Someone's scrunched up, sat-on copy on the train? How do you read it? That is, which sections and why?
I don't read it much - I'm usually pretty clueless on current affairs (not by choice! I just find the family's newspaper of choice a bit TOOMUCHBRAIN), but the things I tend to know about I find out from other people, the radio, television news and the 'Net. I like the magazines that come in the weekend newspapers, with feature articles and lifestyle stuff. I can't stand the (celebrity) gossip sections. I also read the parts where people send in rants, or one silly little column I like in my city's newspaper is described in Wikipedia as "The content tends to the quirky, typically involving strange urban occurrences, instances of confusing signs (often in Engrish), wordplay, and discussion of more or less esoteric topics."
In other words, I only use the newspaper to read random bits and pieces, not on a regular, thorough or current-affairs basis.
I realise this is slightly obscure as we all have different local and city and national newspapers, but...
Oh, and does anyone actually read the local newspaper - by your county, local council, town, shire, suburb, whatever? I don't think many people read the local newspaper where I am - it's just used for pet litter or whatever.

P.S. I know this is kind-of an odd topic, but I've been meaning to ask Dovies this for possibly a few years...
